The Daniel Foundation made a grant for $12,000 to the Huntsville Community Drumline for their all area Youth Drumline and Drums After School Music program. These after school programs are free year round and weekly music programs that include professional curriculum based music instruction. Through intense training, the goal is for participants to develop the musical skills and leadership skills necessary to win scholarships. The programs answer the call for affordable programs that keep at risk children active, off the streets and involved in a community based initiative with far reaching benefits.
With the help of professional musicians and community volunteers, their mission is to foster hope and potential in youth through percussion education and exposing students to this art form. In addition to learning percussion, participants also receive after school tutoring while in the program. The Travelling Drums program brings drums to schools with 80% free and reduced lunch. Students are able to participate after school in the program at their school making the arts accessible to every child. The drumline program also creates an opportunity for students to develop a positive mentor relationship with instructors and volunteers.
